This article gave us a lot of information about different types of SPD and the types needs and triggers.

 We used the different types of SPD to create our venue. This research was very helpful for us to figure out what types we could accommodate and how. This affected our venue a lot by giving us information to make different types of SPD in different bubbles because many different people react to music and stimulation differently, because of that we made 3 different bubbles that the viewer can sit in while having each bubble be safe for types of SPD making the experience for everyone.

Next steps

If we could continue this project and edit it we would probably make more than 3 bubbles so there could be more specific types to come, and we would also work on researching more to make the bubbles' interior even more specific to each type of SPD.

The Impoverished, privileged, homeless and the stable. These different communities have an ever widening divide between them. But they can be brought together through music and food with a “pay what you can” music venue with amenities.

A person walks into this brand new venue that advertises a pay what you can menu and music service. At the entrance there is a server with a name tag that says, Lance (She/Her) this person walks up to Lance and asks for a menu and a place to sit. Lance asked for this person's taste in music and the person answered techno. Lance guides them to a section reserved for electronic beats and then gives the person a menu and says I'll be back. The person looks around seeing different sections named after styles of music and people of different ages in every section watching the same performance but probably hearing different things. The person listens and hangs out for as long as they want and then leave full and without feeling a big loss of weight in their already light wallet.

MAX Bass was designed to help the hard of hearing listen to music. We realized that they are often left out and not accommodated for because of the misconception that they don’t listen to music. That's why we believed it was so important to have their needs in mind first when designing our venue.

Thesis

Our first design choice was to create lots of vibrations that pass through the floor because that is the main way people with hearing disabilities can experience music.

This is a acoustic mapping of our venue. The white circle represents the subwoofers that will be vibrating the raised sections of the floor. The more red a circle is the higher intensity the vibrations are.

We also made tables with speech-to-touch sensory substitution devices which are little pads you can put your fingers or elbows on from which you can feel vibration. We would put the words of the song through these tables so they could be easily distinguished from the rest of the song. 

We believe it is important to design for these people because they are often just an afterthought tacked on so that they can say they're inclusive. Also there isn’t really a downside to having them in mind because you're going to get a better designed thing that works well for everyone. Which is why MAX Bass plans to enhance the listening experience of not only the hard of hearing but everyone

Research

The video "How Do Deaf People Experience Music" is a deaf person talking about how they and their friends listen to music through vibration. The venue, inspired by this research, play musics through vibrations in the ground and on tactile tables.

The second video is about Amber Galloway Gallego, a sign language interpreter who has signed for many music shows. She said a problem that a lot of deaf people face is hearing the actual lyrics. Taking this into account, the tactile tables spread throughout the venue separating the vocals out and play them.

The article "Hearing Through Your Fingers: Device That Converts Speech" is about speech-to-touch sensory substitution devices and their effectiveness at improving hearing comprehension in not only hearing but in not hearing too.

What's Next?

If we were to continue this project, I think the next step would be trying to make the tactile tables, or creating the venue in AR or VR.

We seek to create a venue that provides an experience for people no matter their hearing abilities. Vibes Lounge offers an experience of sound through tactile sensation and visual representation. Deaf and hard of hearing can often be left out of social gatherings, and this venue is a space where everyone can share a sound experience as a community.

Our plans for this project going forward would be to gather opinions and feedback from people who identify as part of these communities in order to improve The vibes lounge and make it a more welcoming place for everyone. In addition, we would do more research into the materials used throughout the venue as to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible.
